Hospital visit pt 3...the spill...again
So, Kimberly was getting antibiotics throgh an iv. Every couple of hours, I'd have to call the nurse and have them change her iv. Well, one time, the nurse was hooking up a new bottle of medicine (not salts-actual antibiotics) and spilled it on the floor. She just kind of stood there looking at it. Then she looked at me and walked out, leaving kimberly hooked up to a bottle of antibiotics that was only 1/4 full. About 10 minutes later, the bottle was completely empty, so I called the nurse. A different nurse came.
She said, "Oh, you finished the antibiotic already. Let me get you back on the salt."
To which I replied, "She didn't get most of that. It spilled and it's on the floor."
"What?"
So I tried it in the local language...literally saying "The medicine isn't in her. It's on the floor...it fell."
"Oh wow! You speak my language!"
"That isn't the point! Her medicine is on the floor-Look."
"Oh that's fine. I'll put her on it again after these salts."
And yes, in case you are wondering, I had to remind her to do the antibiotics later. Sigh...

A visit to the hospital part 2-the spill
Another day, Kimberly spilled her orange drink on her bed and the floor. We rang for the nurse and asked them to clean it up.
"Ok, ok, 5 minutes"
I went downstairs to get some crackers for Kimberly. By the time I got back, I thought the mess had been cleaned up. About 20 minutes later, Kimberly asked me to call the nurse again. I asked why...to clean up the mess, she responded.
So I called the nurse again. "Ok, ok, 10 minutes." This time, I sent an alarm...if they weren't back in 10 minutes, I was going to go out there and get them. At 9 minutes, the first nurse came back in. He stepped in the spilled drink and then asked why it was still there. We said no one had come to clean it up. "What?! 10 minutes...someone will clean it up."
I reset my alarm. 10 minutes later, no one has cleaned up the mess. So, I go to the front desk. I said, "I want a sheet and a towel. Abhee (now!). I have asked you to clean up the spill 3 times and you haven't. So give me what I need and I will do it myself. Abhee!" And they all laughed because I used a word from their language. I turned around, "It's not funny. Now!"
Finally, a lady brought in a towel and a sheet and just looked at me. I shook my head, grabbed the towel and started cleaning the floor. The first nurse walked in. "Why are you cleaning the floor?"
"Because no one else will!"

A hospital visit pt 1.
I've been pretty MIA lately, if you haven't noticed. That is because my roommate has spent the last 5 days in the hospital with...E. coli. (No, it doesn't seem that I have it too...only my poor roommate). And here's the story of the hospital experience...the names have been changed to protect the guilty...
Kimberly checked into the hospital when we were out of town. One minute, she was sick but tolerable...the next minute, she was saying she was in the hospital... Yikes. So we called all of our friends and asked them to go visit her...which they lovingly all did. :) By the time we arrived, she was admitted in the hospital and it seemed the worst might be over...
But even though the worst was over, it was not meant to be a quick recovery or a walk in the park. Kimberly spent 5 days in the hospital, battling the little bug until she finally defeated it. I spent a lot of time with her because I thought it was important that she wasn't left alone (and she didn't want to be left alone)...
I will never again complain about an american hospital! While the bill was exceedingly cheaper than an American medical bill (all her tests, room expenses, consultations and meds under $1,000), the care was next to none.
One time, the first night I stayed, Kimberly had an allergic reaction to her antibiotics. I called the nurse. "Look! She's having a reaction to the meds."
"Oh, madam, we will call the doctor and be right back."
Ten minutes pass...no nurse. So I ring the bell again.
"She's having an allergic reaction to the medicine."
"Oh, I will call the doctor."
20 minutes go by...by this time, the rash has finally started to go away (thank God)but she was feeling light headed. So I called the nurse again. Same thing.
Finally, I go out into the hall and watch for her...she makes eye contact with me, but avoids my room at all cost. Finally, I call her again...same scenario. So one of my South Asian friends tells them to call the doctor, stands there and watches her until the doctor is called.
The doctor and someone else come into the room...
"You don't look like you are comfortable."
"No, I'm not comfortable! I had an allergic reaction to the medicine, and no one did ANYTHING about it!"
"Well, you shouldn't have had an allergic reaction...you had an allergic reaction the first time we gave you the drug, but not the 2nd...so it shouldn't have caused you to break out this 3rd time..."
"Well, it did, so could you please, give her something for it! She's feeling light headed."
"Oh of course....right away."
10 minutes later, they finally gave her something for the reaction...if it had been something that caused her to not be able to breath or something with her heart, she might not have made it. Morbid, but true. Thank goodness it was only a rash...

Photo of the day 8-12-2010
Today's photo of the day comes with a story...
We went to the old side of our city to visit a friend. She had moved so we didn't know exactly where she lived now. So, she told us to meet her at a specific restaurant...however, we didn't realize that there were two of this restaurant within a few minutes from each other and we went to the wrong one. When we get out, I take my camera out to search photo opts while Kimberly looks for her friend. An older man approaches us, asking us if we lost or needed some help. When we answered no, they started asking questions about who we were, what we doing, etc. Then, one man pointed out an elderly gentleman and said that he was the oldest man there, that he was 82, and he was a senior citizen. From there, they proceeded to help us get to our destination after serving us coffee, telling us that we were their honored guests, and inviting us to their senior citizen meeting. Such hospitality!

Here are some monsoon pics. Our city has been flooded lately...I mean, some places completely underwater...others waist high, others knee high. It's been pretty crazy. I promise when I can actually get out and about again, I will get more pics of people and will stop taking pics of the rain...but that's about all there is now. One of these pics is taken from my apartment....hopefully, these are some of the last few monsoon. The other one This a pic from the newspaper...this is an area that I go to about once a week and my friends called me yesterday and said, "Don't come! It's too dangerous." Then, I opened the newspaper and saw that, yes, it is quite dangereous.

Wait for it...
Because I am temporarily out of the city, I don't have access to my computer...so I will get to the photo of the day (and hopefully some other crazy stories) when I get back home. :)

8-1-2010 Photo of the day
Oh goodness, how can it already be August?!?!? I'm planning to go home in November, so I'm slowly starting to realize that time is winding down! Today's photo is taken in the middle of the monsoon. We had heavy, heavy rain for about 3 hours, which put this troupe of monkey's plans on hold for awhile...

Here are the three pics of the day...Yes, I gave in to posting three of them...
These are taken in a slum area where the people build the idols. They are some of the poorest of the poor in our city and the only income they receive is from making the idols and begging on the streets. We've started going to this area once a week and it's been crazy to see how going to see these people and building relationships with them can completely change your heart towards the beggars. While before they were faceless annoyances, now they have names and faces and we recognize them. It's been hard, I'm not going to lie. But I wanted to take a moment to show you some of their beautiful faces.
